The Architect - The Method - The Guide

Illustrated portrait of architect Andres Parra Ordoñez

For Andres Parra Ordoñez, Prague is not simply a collection of monuments — it is a city to be read through its façades, passages, courtyards, tram routes and public spaces. Its character is found not only in celebrated landmarks, but in thresholds, shifting light, worn stone, changing neighbourhoods and the traces left by generations of everyday life.

An architect with 30 years of international architectural experience across Europe, Australia and Latin America, Andres created Architektura Playground Praha to share a more curious, attentive and informed way of exploring the city. His perspective has been shaped by working and living across different cultures, and by a longstanding interest in the relationship between architecture, memory and human experience.

His walks combine architectural insight, cultural context and conversation, revealing how Prague has been imagined, built, transformed and inhabited over time. Rather than presenting the city as a finished picture, he approaches it as an ongoing conversation between different periods, ideas and communities. Less a traditional tour, each experience is an invitation to slow down, look more carefully and see the city differently.

His understanding of architecture begins with genius loci—the spirit of place. He sees architecture as the meeting point of poetry and engineering: an intangible language shaped by form, material, time, light and geography, always in dialogue with the human soul.

Buildings are therefore more than isolated objects. They are evidence of the people who conceived them, the societies that constructed them and the lives that continue to unfold within and around them.

This way of encountering a city extends beyond observation. It engages all the senses: the rhythm of footsteps and trams, the changing acoustics of a passage, the aromas of gardens, timber, stone and cafés, the taste of local food, and the feeling of texture, temperature, scale and movement. Together, these impressions create a richer and more embodied understanding of place.

Perception, however, is never entirely neutral. Each person experiences the city through individual memories, lessons and expectations, filtered through cultural, moral and behavioural paradigms. Andres encourages visitors to recognise these filters — not to remove them, but to consider how they influence what we notice, value and remember. Architectural knowledge can then connect these personal impressions to a wider story of design movements, political change, local customs and the aspirations of different generations.

Sketching and photography form an important part of this method. They are not treated merely as forms of documentation, but as individual acts of interpretation. To draw or photograph a place is to pause, select, frame and express what it means to us at a particular moment. These practices allow each participant to create a personal record of their encounter with Prague and to form a more intimate relationship with the city.

Prague makes this dialogue especially visible. Throughout the centuries, its streets, buildings, myths and contradictions have inspired literature, art, music and architecture — making the city both subject and muse. Gothic towers, Baroque domes, Cubist façades, Functionalist ideals and contemporary interventions do not exist as separate chapters. They meet within the same streets, forming a layered urban landscape in which continuity and transformation remain in constant conversation.

From this perspective, a city is never a static collection of objects, but a living record of memory, imagination and everyday life. The aim is not to prescribe a single interpretation of Prague, but to awaken curiosity and provide visitors with the tools to develop their own.

To move through the city attentively is to discover not only how places are made, but how they quietly shape us in return.
